Aboriginal Housing: Today
AHMA currently oversees housing units throughout BC and is in the process of finalizing the transfer of approximately 2,660 off-reserve Aboriginal housing units from BC Housing.
While the housing conditions of some Aboriginal people have improved in the past decade, others live in poor conditions—overcrowded and in homes needing major repair—than those enjoyed by non-Aboriginal people.
Consider These Facts
According to BC Housing statistics (www.bchousing.org):- Almost 30 per cent of off reserve Aboriginals live in inadequate housing or in places they cannot afford.
- 1/3 of all homeless people in Greater Vancouver are Aboriginal.
- The metropolitan area of Vancouver is home to the third largest Aboriginal population of all urban centres in the country, with 40,310 Aboriginal people
- Nationally, Aboriginal people were almost four times as likely as non-Aboriginal people to live in a crowded dwelling.
- In BC, 62% of First Nations people lived off reserve.
